The Dangers Of Cheap Elliptical Trainers
We all want to save a buck or two, especially in these economic times. But there are times when you really shouldn't buy by price alone...and cheap elliptical trainers is one area that you really can't afford to skimp on. Why? Because although the health of your wallet is important, the health and safety of your body is much, much more so.
That's not to say that you have to spend thousands of dollars on an elliptical machine... only that you need to look at several other factors before you look at the price tag. There are quality ellipticals to be had for discount prices, but if you simply buy based on the lowest sticker price you're likely to get stuck with a machine that ends up gathering dust in the basement.
Safety
Many cheap elliptical trainers are cheap because they have used cheap building materials. They tend to be smaller, and more lightweight. And this can translate into a rocky ride for you!
It's important to have an elliptical that is steady and stable when you use it. Cheaper models tend to lose stability, especially if you are working out at more intense levels. If your machine wobbles, or rocks when you use it, you are risking injury. And not just from tipping over... a more stable machine keeps your hips, knees and ankles in better alignment so you avoid strain and pain to your joints. A machine that wobbles means that you are throwing yourself out of alignment to keep steady, and that can lead to chronic joint pain or injury.
Health
Another feature that cheap ellipticals often lack is customization. When you're buying an elliptical, you need to make sure that the stride length, and the placement of the foot pedals are optimal for your body size. Many better-quality models either offer a wider range of fits, or allow you to adjust according to the person using the machine.
Cheaper models tend to be one-size-fits-all, with little to no customization possible. If your stride length is too short or long, if the pedals are to close together or far apart, and if the pedals are too small or inflexible, you are eventually going to feel pain in your jionts... and negate the whole purpose of the elliptical as a low impact workout machine.
That said, you can find relatively cheap elliptical trainers from reputable manufacturers. These are from manufacturers that also make high-end ellipticals, and they know how to build a safe, reliable machine for a smaller price tag. You maybe lucky enough to find a manufacturer selling old stock at discount prices.
Just remember that price should be one of several factors that influences your purchase. Make sure the machine is safe, steady and comfortable before you get swayed by a tempting ticket price.
