Proform 790E Elliptical Trainer
The Proform 790E elliptical trainer is a decent machine with a budget price. It's not the best of the bunch out there on the market, but if you are a light exerciser then you might like this model. It's a front-drive elliptical with a great selection of programs, but it's light construction and instability make it more suitable for smaller, lighter weight users.
Proform 790E Features
Probably the best feature of this elliptical is the Power Intensity Ramp. Most budget machines have manual controls, and don't allow you to change things up too much during your actual workout, so it's nice to see this capability here. You can change your intensity up to 25 degrees, without interrupting your workout.
This Proform model also comes with a whopping 24 workouts plus iFit compatibility, which is the highest number of programs on the market for a budget elliptical.
Other than that, this is a fairly standard elliptical... and nothing wrong with that. The stride length is a decent 18", so if you're a fairly tall person (say 6' or over) then this may be too short for you. Heart rate monitoring is accomplished via the hand grips. You can get an upper body workout with this elliptical as well, with the workout arms.
The pedals are oversized, so there is plenty of room to adjust your foot positioning. However, the pedals are not articulating. There is an onboard fan, and you can plug your iPod right in to the music port for listening, although neither of these features are astounding in quality.
Where the concern lies is the same with all budget machines... the construction and stability. The build feels plastic, and there have been many reviews talking about the machine wobbling. This is due to the over-inflated weight limit of 325 lbs. Realistically, this machine should be top-rated for 200 lbs maximum.
Value for Money
You can usually find this elliptical for between $700-$800 which, although cheaper than some other models, isn't really a huge deal considering what you are getting. There are lower-priced ellipticals that actually give you more bang for your buck (the Schwinn 431, for example). Combines with only one year warranty on parts and labor, and you're really not saving much money in the long run.
Bottom Line
Overall, the Proform 790E elliptical trainer is a decent machine, but you would be better off spending a little bit more on a better model. If you can find this machine for under $500, and you are a small, lightweight person, then it would be a great deal for you.
